DR. LAKHUMAL HIRANAND HIRANANDANI

Born in the year 1917 in Thatta, Pakistan, Dr. Hiranandani came to Bombay as poor boy in 1937 to study Medicine. With the financial help of teachers who liked him for his hard work. he went abroad and became F.R.C.S. He then joined Topiwala National Medical College and B.Y.L. Nair Hospital, Mumbai. as Honorary Ear. Nose & Throat Surgeon. He retired at the age of 58. But the Municipal Corporation of Greater Bombay appointed him as Professor Emeritus and Advisor to the Department of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck where he continued to work upto the age of 65. He is now working at Bombay Hospital. Breach Candy Hospital and Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai.

His academic activities were published in many Indian and Foreign Jounals. His book on Ear Pathology was published by the Butterworths of London. He has been appointed as the Member of the American Society of Head & Heck Surgery, and is a founder member of the Association of Otolaryngologists of India.

He introduced the department of Head and Neck as part of E.N.T. department in India . and the first Head and Neck Department was established at the BYL. Nair Hospital . The Municipal Corporation of Greater Bombay passed a Resolution to name the Department as "Dr. Hiranandani's department of Otolaryngology and Head & Neck." Besides this. he is instrumental for setting up Seth AJ.B. Municipal Ear. Nose. Throat Hospital . Speech and Audiology School and Vestibular Research Unit at B.Y.L. Nair Hospital and Topiwala National Medical College . He has been guest speaker at several International conferences held in the US, South Korea, Canada, Indonesia and Japan .

Dr. Hiananadani was the President of Silver Jubilee Conference of AOI in 1973. He received the Dhanvantari Award in the year 1988. being the first person in the field of E.N.T. to receive this award.

He has created 15 Research Endowments of Rs. 1 Lac each in different Universities throughout in India along with 20 orations and a number of Awards and Prizes in the field of Ear. Nose and Throat. For this cause, his own contribution is about Rs. 3 lacs.

He was nominated as Member of Medical Council of India by the Government of Maharashtra. He was also a Member of Executive Body of Medical Council of India from 1990 to 1995. The Medical Council elected him as Member of Executive Council and nominated him as Member of National Board.

He is Governing Body Member of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and also the Chairman of the Expert Committee of LC.M.R. He has also been an advisor to the T Tnion Public Service Commission and Maharashtra Public Service Commission. He is the Chairman of the Hiranandani Foundation. which has opened a Primay and Secondary School (I.C.S.E.) in 1990 at Powai in Mumbai with an endowment of Rs. 2.5 crores.

In recognition of the valuable services rendered by him, the President of India in 1972 conferred upon him the honour of Padma-Bhushan.
