History of AOI Haryana
THE ORIGIN OF THE ASSOCIATION OF OTOLARYNGOLOGISTS OF INDIA

Sometime in Oct. 1946. Dr. C. A Amesur. the then Head of Department of ENT. Grant Medical College & J.J. Hospital , Bombay came to Madras for Post. Graduation examinations where he was asked by some E.N.T. specialists to form an All India Association. He agreed to discuss this matter with Dr. Gandhi. who was Head of ENT at KEM Hospital. Bombay and asked Dr. Satyanarayana to convince Dr. P.V. Cherian. Professor and Head of E.N.T. at Govt. Medical College . Madras about such a possibility.

In 1947 when Dr. C.A Amesur visited Madras again it was decided to form this association with the inauguration to be done at Bombay . The' constitution of several organisations was consulted before forming the constitution of AO.I. Meanwhile a good number of E.N.T. specialist; were sounded in India about the formation of this association, and many of them responded. In Bombay Dr. S. C. Joshi, Dr. L. H. Hiranandani. Dr. J. V. Desa. Dr. R. A F. Cooper and several others worked hard to form this organisation. The inauguration was done in Bombay in 1947 and Dr. P.V. Cherian was made the president. Dr. C.A Amesur. the secretary and Dr. H. D. Gandhi. the treasurer and it was decided to hold the first conference in Madras in 1948. Dr. C. Satyanarayana was the organising secretary of the first conference.

The logo of the Association and the Presidient's medallion which is made up of silver with gold plated crest was designed by Dr. C. Satyanarayana His excellency the maharaja of Bhavanagar, the then Governor of MadrCJs opened the conference with a spirited speech and the Hon'ble Minister of Health Dr. A V. Shetty inaugurated the conference which was attended by 63 delegates.

Dr. P. V. Cherian in his presidential said. "Otolaryngology is a very young speciality in India and as such it needs careful nurture for its infant growth before it. attains robust maturity. It is a sad fact that for a considerahle time it could not be recognised as a speciality. In many places it was and is still tied. to Ophthalmology. In other places it. forms part of General Surgery. At the other extreme we find in certain places outside India , the subject is subdivided into diseases of the ear on the one hand and diseases of the Nose and Throat on the other. Our one aim and objective is to build our Association on a firm and sure foundation so that the superstrueture will be honourable to the builders and of immense use to the teeming millions of India ".

Bombay was chosen as the headquarter of the association, since most of the specialists came from there. The 2nd Annual Conference was held in Bombay . Dr. C. A. Amesur was the second President of AOI and held this office in 1949 and later again in 1951. The Indian Journal of Otolaryngology was started in June 1949 from Madras with Dr. C. Satyanarayana as the editor and Dr. Joshi as the joint editor

Individual contributions to the assoc:iation have come in many forms. ranging from men who.innovative ideas have enriched us academically to the men whose skill and effort in matter of organisation made implementation of these ideas possible. In last 50 years we have come a long way, and grown mnsiderably in stature as a separate speciality, the credit of which goes to all the members or the association.
